About personal care

What it usually involves

Help with washing, bathing or showering, dressing, shaving, hair, going to the toilet and continence care, done in a way that protects dignity.

How a self-employed carer can help

They can come at times that suit your loved one rather than a rota, and it's the same person each time, which matters for something this personal. Lifting with equipment such as a hoist needs training, so ask about it.

Questions worth asking

How much experience do you have with personal care?
Have you had moving and handling training?
How do you help someone feel comfortable and in control?
Are you happy to be shown how Mum likes things done?
Are you happy to be around pets?

Questions families ask

Can a self-employed carer help with washing and dressing?

Yes, many do. Agree exactly what's included before the first visit, and write it down so there are no surprises.

How long does a personal care visit take?

Usually 30 minutes to an hour for a morning or evening routine. Rushing helps no one, so agree enough time.

Is it free for families?

Yes, completely. We never take a cut of what you pay a carer or cleaner.

Why I started Carers & Cleaners

When my mum, Jean, was diagnosed with dementia, I found it surprisingly hard to find good local help. In the end we found a wonderful independent carer, and later a cleaner, by word of mouth. I built Carers & Cleaners so other families don't have to rely on luck.
