About dementia care
Someone familiar who comes at the same times each week and gets to know your loved one: their routines, what they enjoy, and what unsettles them. That might mean company and conversation, help with meals and drinks, gentle prompts to wash and dress, a walk or a trip to a club, and noticing how they are from one week to the next.
Questions families ask
My mum doesn't want a stranger in the house. What can we do?
That's very common. Many families start small, with an hour or two of company, a cup of tea or a walk, and the same person each time. Once they've become a familiar face, they can gradually help with more.
Can a self-employed carer give medication?
Most can remind and prompt. Anything more is agreed between you and the carer, depending on their experience. A pharmacist can suggest things that make it simpler, such as blister packs.
Is there help with the cost?
Attendance Allowance (Pension Age Disability Payment in Scotland) isn't means-tested, and a dementia diagnosis can also bring a Council Tax reduction. The local council can assess what support your loved one needs.

Are you a carer in Gwynedd?
Join Carers & Cleaners for £1 a year and be found by families looking for dementia care near you. There's no commission: you set your own rates and families pay you directly.
Carers & Cleaners is an introduction service. We don't vet or employ anyone, and what carers and cleaners tell us about themselves is self-declared. Families choose who to speak to and agree everything with them directly.
