About dementia care
What it usually involves
Someone familiar who comes at the same times each week and gets to know your loved one: their routines, what they enjoy, and what unsettles them. That might mean company and conversation, help with meals and drinks, gentle prompts to wash and dress, a walk or a trip to a club, and noticing how they are from one week to the next.
How a self-employed carer can help
Their support is built around the person, not a rota. Often the biggest help is simply seeing the same face every visit. They aren't nurses, so clinical tasks such as injections or wound dressings are usually beyond what they can do.
Questions worth asking
- Have you looked after someone with dementia before?
- What do you do if someone becomes confused or upset?
- How would you let us know if something seemed different?
- Who covers when you're ill or on holiday?
- Are you happy to be around pets?

Questions families ask
Is there help with the cost?
Attendance Allowance (Pension Age Disability Payment in Scotland) isn't means-tested, and a dementia diagnosis can also bring a Council Tax reduction. The local council can assess what support your loved one needs.
Can a self-employed carer give medication?
Most can remind and prompt. Anything more is agreed between you and the carer, depending on their experience. A pharmacist can suggest things that make it simpler, such as blister packs.
Do you check the carers?
No. We're an introduction service: carers tell us about their experience and checks themselves, and these are shown as self-declared. After an introduction we send short guides on what to check and how.

Why I started Carers & Cleaners
When my mum, Jean, was diagnosed with dementia, I found it surprisingly hard to find good local help. In the end we found a wonderful independent carer, and later a cleaner, by word of mouth. I built Carers & Cleaners so other families don't have to rely on luck.
