Hiring a carer or cleaner · Guide 5 of 7
Agreeing terms in writing
Once you've decided to go ahead, write down what you've agreed. It avoids misunderstandings later, and it protects both of you.
A simple written agreement could cover:
- what they'll do, and on which days and times
- the rate, how and when they'll be paid
- notice either side, and what happens with cancellations
- cover for holidays and sickness
- keys, access and alarm codes
- confidentiality
- what to do in an emergency, and who to contact
- a start date, and perhaps a trial period
Employment status matters. A self-employed carer or cleaner runs their own business and pays their own tax and National Insurance. If you decide exactly how, when and where they work, they may count as your employee in law, which brings responsibilities such as tax, holiday pay and pensions. GOV.UK has a free tool called “Check employment status for tax” that can help, and it's worth taking advice if you're unsure.
We hope these guides help, and that you find the right person.
