About meal preparation

What it usually involves

Cooking or preparing meals, leaving drinks within reach, a bit of batch cooking, washing up, and noticing whether food is actually being eaten.

How a self-employed carer can help

They can cook your loved one's favourite dishes, follow a special diet, and keep the fridge fresh by checking dates.

Questions worth asking

Questions families ask

Can a carer cook to a special diet?

Many can. Explain it clearly, and if there's advice from a speech and language therapist about swallowing, share it.

Who buys the food?

Agree it at the start: either you do the shopping, or the carer does and you pay them back against receipts.

What if Dad keeps skipping meals?

A carer can encourage him, and sitting down to eat together often helps. Losing weight without trying is worth mentioning to the GP.

Why I started Carers & Cleaners

When my mum, Jean, was diagnosed with dementia, I found it surprisingly hard to find good local help. In the end we found a wonderful independent carer, and later a cleaner, by word of mouth. I built Carers & Cleaners so other families don't have to rely on luck.

Are you a carer?

Join Carers & Cleaners for £1 a year and be found by families looking for help with meals near you. There's no commission: you set your own rates and families pay you directly.

Join as a carer

Carers & Cleaners is an introduction service. We don't vet or employ anyone, and what carers and cleaners tell us about themselves is self-declared. Families choose who to speak to and agree everything with them directly.
