About overnight care

What it usually involves

A carer in the home overnight. With a sleep-in, they sleep there and help if needed. With a waking night, they stay awake the whole time.

How a self-employed carer can help

Help with the toilet in the night, reassurance after a bad dream, and someone there if your loved one wanders or falls. For the family, it often means the first proper night's sleep in a long time.

Questions worth asking

Questions families ask

What's the difference between a sleep-in and a waking night?

With a sleep-in, the carer goes to bed and gets up only if needed. With a waking night, they stay awake and alert all night. Sleep-ins usually cost less.

Does the carer need their own room?

For a sleep-in, a bed in a private room is usual. For a waking night, a comfortable chair and somewhere to make a drink.

How do we know if we need overnight care?

Common signs are frequent calls in the night, falls, wandering, or a family carer who is exhausted. The GP or a council assessment can help you decide.

Why I started Carers & Cleaners

When my mum, Jean, was diagnosed with dementia, I found it surprisingly hard to find good local help. In the end we found a wonderful independent carer, and later a cleaner, by word of mouth. I built Carers & Cleaners so other families don't have to rely on luck.
